Should we Be Sitting or Standing when Working: That is the  golden question?  By Rush Hour Printing and Graphics

As a small business, we understand the issues with sitting while working. In fact, we now have standing stations so that people’s back can get some kind of break. Whether it is healthier to sit or stand, we really do not know but we need to discuss it.

Let’s go!

Lately, we have been standing at the office, we find it better for our posture but there are times when sitting down is the answer. What is the magic trick here? We are guessing it is all about the balance. Can you sit for a few minutes or hours and then stand for another two again? Why not? Everything is possible, and the balance is so indispensable.

The ideal form is in the S shape (spine wise).  This shape absorbs the shock of standing or sitting for a long period and gives the body that structure that it needs to stand or sit upright. Sitting down will flatten the lower curve and change the shape to a C. This places force unevenly throughout the body and stretches the muscles, ligaments and muscles which then creates fatigue. This is not ideal and the reason why so many people are now using standing workstations.

Because today everything we do is online, or needs a computer to be finalized, we want to make sure our office environment is ethical and not ruining people’s back for the sake of income earning. That is just not fair! We at Rush Hour Printing and Graphics believe that we are under a corporate ethical social responsibility that must be met and because of this, we respect and honor our employees. We think ahead so their best interests are met. This is how a successful business runs!

In general, you want to get your employees moving as much as possible throughout the day. We would say every hour, they should have a 5 minute break where they stretch and even drink water, some yoga poses, etc. Here are seven ways to add movement to their day:

1.    Stand when you need to answer the phone – it puts you in a better mood anyways!
2.    Stand during meetings – the whole project management concept of stand-up meetings is genius!
3.    Position the printer far away from the desk so there is a need to walk to it and not just move the body’s upper area while sitting down to grab it!
4.    When you need to send an email within your department, walk to the coworker’s desk instead of using the computer.
5.    During lunch hour, lots of movements – go for walks, runs, activities that are personal or maybe even errands for the business.
6.    Drink Water all day long and Walk to the water fountain every single time.
7.    Sit and stand – sit and stand – repeat, do it again – move lots!
